How to Design Your Kitchen: Everything You Should Consider

Posted in : Kitchen on by :

Designing your kitchen can be overwhelming. There are so many things to consider, including the layout, appliances, colors, and more. The key to designing the kitchen of your dreams is understanding how to approach each of these considerations. In this article, we’ll explore some key factors you should think about when planning out your new kitchen.

1) Space

The first to consider is the amount of space you have. You’ll want to measure your kitchen before ordering anything so that when it comes, it will fit. If you don’t have a lot of counter space, look at different cabinets that can help organize and store things in small spaces. If you’re going with granite for your counters, make sure there’s enough room to install them because you don’t want to have to rip out a perfectly good counter just because the material was too wide.

2) Appliances

An important thing you should consider when designing your kitchen is the appliances. You have to think about what appliances you need and how many, as well as what size of fridge or dishwasher you want. If you have a lot of counter space, go with an island and not a peninsula because this will give you more room for extra appliances. You might also want to look into getting a microwave or other appliance if your space allows it.

3) Storage

Think about how much storage you need for not only larger items, but also smaller ones that tend to get lost in the back of cupboards. You won’t want to spend hours searching for small things that you need, like a measuring cup or your favorite spatula; it’s better if they’re always at the ready when you need them.

Organize things in your cabinets in such a way that similar items are together, so if you need a spoon to scoop your flour out of the container, you can just pull one out from that section instead of having to rummage through your whole cupboard.

Make sure your kitchen has cabinets that withhold heat in the summer and cold in the winter. Consider installing cabinet doors that seal tight and, if possible, are insulated.

4) Counter Organization

While kitchen countertop organization is important for keeping your items within reach and visible at a glance, it’s also important to consider the height of your countertop. This is often overlooked, but if the countertop is too high, you have to reach up and down for things that can be tiring after a while.

If you’re going to get appliances or pull-out cabinets, think about how they will affect the space available in your kitchen. It’s typically better not to have bar-like countertops because you’ll lose a lot of space when the items slide out.

5) Materials/Texture

The materials you choose for your kitchen cabinet doors and drawers should match the style of your kitchen. You also want to consider what’s best for keeping the heat in or cold things cold, depending on the season. You can get doors that have high insulation if you want to keep heat in or out.

6) Lighting

Make sure there’s plenty of light and that the lights are located in areas where they will be most functional while not being an eyesore. You’ll also want to think about what you need the lights for; if you’re often working with food, make sure the lighting is bright enough so that you can see everything clearly without having difficulty.

7) The Exterior

Choose colors and materials that match your home’s decor, or go with something unique to add some character to space. If there are kids in your family, make sure it’s kid-proof because as fun as a new kitchen is, it can be dangerous if you don’t prepare for the worst.

8) The cost and warranties

The last thing to consider is cost. Don’t get carried away by how beautiful something may look before thinking of the price. However, if you have room in your budget, it is a good idea to go ahead and spend some extra money on higher quality because it will last longer.

If you are buying a custom kitchen, ask how long the manufacturer guarantees their products for. You want to make sure they won’t fall apart in five years and leave your family without a kitchen once again.

Types of Kitchen Cabinets

1) Wall cabinets

Wall cabinets are mounted on a wall and used for storage, either for dishes or other small things. These can be very useful if you have an island because they take up some empty space between the island and the stove or countertop. Some people don’t like these because they’re not concealed, but if you like the look of them, they can be a very practical option.

2) Base cabinets

Base cabinets are mounted below the counter and used for storing larger items that don’t fit in wall cabinets or drawers. These come in three different depths; shallow, medium, or deep, with shallow being smaller than the other two. This is usually the type found in kitchens, and you can buy them with either doors or drawers.

3) Drawers

Drawers aren’t as popular as they used to be because base cabinets have evolved into having doors, but if you still want a drawer kitchen, it’s not hard to find one. The benefit of a drawer is that some parts are concealed; sometimes you can choose whether to have the front of them open or not.

4) Isolated Base Cabinets

These are used for storing larger items like appliances that will be visible from the kitchen, and they hide stuff usually found in base cabinets, such as a microwave. They are usually mounted above the base cabinets, so it depends on your kitchen layout whether you want these. They are often used with a door for additional concealment.

5) Storage Units / Cupboards

These are usually found in laundry rooms, but there is no reason why you can’t use them in your kitchen if it helps organize things better. These come in different types such as wooden, plastic, or metal.

There are many ways to design your kitchen, but no matter what you choose, the most important part is that you’re happy with it. Just remember to keep in mind the space limitations of your home and how much storage will be available, as well as the price range of the kitchen.
